Biology performance in the Institutional Teaching Initiation Scholarship Program (PIBID) in public schools in Caxias do Sul - Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

The Institutional Program Initiation to Teaching Grant (PIBID) is part of the implementation for quality education. It aims to provide training for teachers with little experience, and to prepare the teacher for the daily reality of public schools. The program has helped undergraduate students with their teaching skills, and the school-age students they interact with. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the PIBID-Biology /UCS (Caxias do Sul) in two partner institutions - Escola Estadual de Ensino Médio Irmão Guerini and Colégio Estadual Imigrante (RS/Brazil) - and to ascertain the contribution of the various activities to the process of teaching and learning. The performance of PIBID-Biology was satisfactory and relevant. The information obtained here will help program members to achieve a more efficient performance. Insights were also gained on which practical activities stimulated the students the most and which favored teacher participation and student learning. The PIBID is essential for good pedagogical practices inside and outside the classroom, as it promotes the exchange of experience among teachers and teaching students, and encorages the constant search for meaningful teaching activities.
