Abstract

This article discusses reading and the teaching of literature in Brazilian high schools based on Antonio Candido's conception of the right to literature. Candido's thought is related to the guidelines of the National Common Curriculum Base (BNCC), a document that guides the high school curriculum and establishes competencies and skills aimed at the democratization of education. The BNCC recognizes the importance of literature as an artistic language that broadens worldviews and contributes to the critical and creative development of students. Literary reading is central to the BNCC, being articulated with the artistic-literary fields and with study and research practices that promote both aesthetic contact with works and the development of intellectual autonomy and scientific curiosity. Despite technological advances and greater access to digital texts and peripheral productions, social and educational inequalities persist, hindering effective access to critical reading. Recent data indicate low levels of proficiency in Portuguese among high school students, revealing the urgency of consistent public policies to encourage literary reading. Thus, the authors argue that guaranteeing the right to literature is also guaranteeing an emancipatory education, capable of forming sensitive, critical citizens aware of their social role.
