This study sought to analyze the difficulties and challenges of the open innovation management model for the Sicredi Credit Cooperative System. It used a qualitative approach, with the method of a case study. Data were collected through interviews, documents and observation. For analysis, the technique of content analysis with mixed categories was used. The research results demonstrate that the financial institution has aspects of closed innovation influenced by regulations in the financial system, but the predominance of the open innovation model was evidenced, with the exploration of external relationship sources for the promotion of innovation. Among the main challenges in the practice of an open-type innovation in Sicredi, the regulation of the financial system, organizational structure, cultural aspects, intercooperation between cooperatives and different generations of members stood out.
