Abstract

Geographical indications (GIs) apply to goods and services that are differentiated by the place from which they originate. By carrying the geographical name, they highlight not only the product, but also the territory as a whole. In this sense, it is possible to increase tourism through GIs and strengthen GIs through tourism. However, there are challenges if there is to be a greater chance of success. A critical approach and decision-making tools for public and private managers are needed. The aim was therefore to discuss the challenges of using geographical indications in tourism in Brazil. To this end, we carried out a systematic review and field research with direct observations and informal interviews in regions with GIs for cheese (05) and wine (09). There are tourism products formatted to valorize GIs and differentiate the experience through this sign, but there are also flaws and misconceptions regarding the sign. The challenges of implementing GI tourism projects involve multiple interests, including public authorities, the production chain and the tourist trade.
