Abstract

Tourism-oriented marketing benefits from the use of Information and Communication Technologies [ICT] to enhance the experience offered to tourists and increase demand. Among the tools used, the application of gamification in tourism activities and the creation of new intelligent tourist destinations has recently received significant attention from both the market and scientific production. However, it is necessary to demonstrate the existing differences between gamification in tourism activities and video game-induced tourism, a micro-niche of tourism that benefits from advances in computer graphics applied to the transcription and digital reconstruction of locations in electronic games. To do so, a theoretical survey was conducted on gamification and its fundamental elements, as well as the characteristics of video game-induced tourism, a new potential tool for promoting destinations and tourist products. The results showed that the approaches have fundamental differences, although both use components related to both ICT and games.
