Abstract

This study analyzes the relevance of the Geographical Indication (GI) seal of Guaraná de Maués for the development of local tourism, highlighting cultural, economic and geographical aspects. The certification granted by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) adds value to the product by linking it to the unique characteristics of the municipality, such as equatorial climate, fertile soil and indigenous cultural heritage. In addition to increasing the national and international recognition of guarana, the seal promotes sustainable practices, values local identity and strengthens the regional economy. The research is based on the concepts of territory, culture and economy, emphasizing the relationship between territory and social dynamics, according to Milton Santos (2011). A qualitative and exploratory approach was adopted, with a literature review and case study, focusing on the Guaraná Festival, a cultural heritage and tourist attraction. The study also integrates traditional narratives into local development strategy. The results show that the GI seal boosts the recognition of guaraná, reinforcing the cultural identity of Maués and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices. The Guaraná Festival plays a strategic role in promoting tourism and strengthening local identity, attracting visitors and generating economic opportunities. In addition, the GI label encourages the organisation of producers into associations, improving access to the market and promoting Community cooperation. It is concluded that the certification contributes to consolidate Maués as a sustainable tourist destination, integrating economy, culture and environmental preservation.
