Abstract

The article investigates the state of research into the quality of hotel guests' sleep in the context of the tourist experience. The method chosen was an Integrative Literature Review. Prisma was adopted as the research protocol and twelve articles were selected for full analysis from the Portal de Periódicos Capes database. To discuss the results, summary tables are presented containing the titles, journals of publication, theme, objectives, geographical context, methodological characterisation, results and main findings of the selected articles. The analysis of the results, developed in the 2011-2023 timeframe, revealed a fragile boundary between the thematic approaches. Factors internal and external to the accommodation, travel profile, conditions and motivations were emphasised as influencing the quality of guests' sleep. It was observed that: (1) the research is mostly concentrated in the United States; (2) methodologically, the empirical studies are case studies, with predominantly quantitative and mixed approaches; (3) the research results reinforce and complement each other rather than contradict each other. This review is relevant for hotel researchers and managers to rethink the meaning of sleep quality as a factor that enhances the tourist experience, defining strategies capable of satisfying guests' needs, tastes and preferences while maintaining high occupancy rates.
