Abstract

This article discusses the importance of using English-language literature as a tool for training readers and for children's all-around development in the early grades of elementary school. Using the work of scholars such as Colomer, Coelho, Zilberman, and Oening, the article analyzes the cognitive, linguistic, emotional, and cultural benefits of reading literary works in English from an early age. The article also highlights how literature expands vocabulary, imagination, empathy, and appreciation for cultural diversity. Finally, the article suggests literary works suitable for pedagogical use with young elementary school students, reinforcing the idea that reading literature in a second language is a valuable, meaningful, and transformative educational experience.
