The present article aims to examine the discussion around the concept of ideology in the film Struggles in Italy (Lotte in Italia, 1970) by the Dziga Vertov Group, a collective of filmmakers created by Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin. To do so, we intend to analyze how the Dziga Vertov Group uses the essay-film format as a way to elucidate their questions and use as a basis the essay Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses by the French Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser, also published in 1970, to comment on the content of the film. Both works deal with how bourgeois ideology is embedded in people’s lives in contemporary society. The research methodology is based on the method proposed by Francis Vanoye and Anne Goliot-Lété, which seeks to deconstruct the film to understand its constituent elements, and then understand the relationship between them and make the inquiries about the essay-film and similarities with the work of Althusser. It was concluded in this paper that the film Struggles in Italy can be considered an essay-film, not because it is inspired by a literary essay, but because it has formal qualities that lead to such categorization, and that there are also many similarities between the film and the text Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses, especially regarding the definition of ideology in the works and its functioning.
