The exponential growth of forced displacement on a global scale has posed new challenges to contemporary societies, particularly with regard to policies of reception and integration of people in situations of migration and refuge. In this context, learning the language of the host country emerges as a central dimension of processes of social interaction, access to rights, and the construction of a sense of belonging. This article discusses theoretical, methodological, and ethical-political principles that guide the teaching of Portuguese as a Language of Welcome (PLAc), taking as its reference extension and research actions developed within the scope of Project LER in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte. Based on the Freirean notion of dialogue and listening as a foundational practice, the study analyzes the commitment to “seeing and listening in order to better welcome” as a structuring axis of situated, decolonial, intercultural, and transdisciplinary multiliteracies practices, capable of articulating teaching, research, extension, and their role in the construction of public policies for this agenda.
