Abstract

Taking as a reference the notion of “enabling contexts” for innovation, this study aimed to analyze the influence of contextual dimensions involved in the innovation process in organizations located in Silicon Valley (United States). Adopting the case study method, it was possible to capture the view of Silicon Valley professionals about how certain contextual dimensions (specifically, culture, work, structure, technology and physical environment) influence the innovative process of organizations. The results indicate that the cultural, work and organizational design dimensions were the ones that stood out the most in the interviewees' reports, pointing out that such conditions directly affect the level of innovation of the organizations. Therefore, it can be inferred that such dimensions are presented as a gear capable of mobilizing individuals towards the creation of knowledge and innovation. The technological and physical aspects did not appear spontaneously in the interviews as conditions directly linked to the creative process, but only with an indirect influence on innovation, by allowing greater interaction and communication between individuals / teams. Such results may indicate that innovation is more related to soft aspects (personal and informal) than to hard aspects. In terms of its relevance, this study is justified when investigating, from the perspective of agents directly involved in innovation, stories and experiences lived in innovative environments, considering that Silicon Valley is one of the most prominent regions in terms of new technologies in the world. It was then possible to understand, in some way, the implications of different dimensions of the organization in the innovative process.

Anderson de Souza Sant'Anna é professor adjunto do Departamento de Administração Geral e de Recursos Humanos da FGV-EAESP. É pós-doutor em Teoria Psicanálitica pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, doutor em Administração, doutor em Arquitetura e Urbanismo, mestre e graduado em Administração pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). É pesquisador produtividade do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), membro da Câmara de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas da Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG) e membro co-fundador da Associação Lusófona de Administração e Gestão (ALGA). É também pesquisador do Centro de Pesquisas do Trabalho, Saúde e Efetividade Organizacional - CRITEOS (HEC Montreal) e do Núcleo de Estudos sobre Organizações, Sociedade e Subjetividade - NOSS (CEFET-MG), psicanalista sócio do Círculo Psicanalítico de Minas Gerais (CPMG) e membro do Instituto Sephora de Estudos de Orientação Lacaniana (UFRJ). Atua como editor associado e membro de conselho de diversas revistas brasileiras no campo da Administração. Foi professor da Fundação Dom Cabral (FDC), tendo como foco de sua experiência as áreas de comportamento organizacional e gestão de pessoas, em particular, nos temas de liderança, desenho organizacional, qualidade de vida no trabalho, carreiras e competências.

Professora Adjunta da Universidade Federal de São João Del Rei (UFSJ), vinculada ao Departamento de Ciências Administrativas e Contábeis - DECAC. Professo Mestrado PROFNIT (Programa Stricto Sensu em Propriedade Intelectual e Transferência de Tecnologia para a Inovação da UFSJ). Doutora em Administração pela UFM linha de 'Gestão e Tecnologias Gerenciais'. Mestre em Administração pela PUC Minas, na linha de 'Inovação e Conhecimento'. Possui experiência em docência e pesquis instituições de ensino, como a Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (UFOP), a Fundação Dom Cabral (FDC) e a Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV). Sua trajetória acadê inclui participação em projetos de pesquisa e publicações nas áreas de Inovação e Transferência de Tecnologia; Liderança e Gestão de Pessoas; Empreendedorismo e C Social, dentre outros temas.
